Lay Liturgical Ministry

One of the largest ministry groups at Ascension, Lay Liturgical Ministers serve in several capacities at the altar and lectern, as well as outside the church.

A Lector, or Lay Reader, reads lessons during a service, usually the first lesson and psalm.  A Eucharistic Minister also reads lessons, the Prayers of the People, and serves the chalice.  A Eucharistic Visitor takes communion and prayers from the church to those unable to attend a regular service.  In the absence of clergy, a Worship Leader can lead a service such as Morning Prayer, Evening Prayer, or a burial if necessary.

With the exception of Lector, a license from the Diocese is required for each ministry.  An individual can have multiple licenses.  Each ministry also requires training, which usually takes place at Ascension.

A schedule is prepared each quarter for our Lay Liturgical Ministers.  Lectors attending the 8 AM service usually read about once a month, while those at 10 AM read once or twice a quarter.  Eucharistic ministers typically serve two or three times a quarter.  Eucharistic Visitors and Worship Leaders serve as needed.

These are particularly joyful and meaningful ministries for each member.  All are welcomed to participate.
