Music & Choir

The mission of Ascension’s Music Program is to enhance and encourage the spirituality of its community and maintain Anglican tradition through its choral music and a variety of musical styles.

 

Youth Choir

The Youth Choir of Ascension Episcopal Church strives for excellence in quality sacred music while creating educational, cultural and spiritual experiences for its members. The lives of choir members are further enriched and encouraged as they develop self-discipline and accountability if themselves and others.

The Ascension Youth Choir, composed of girls and boys 3rd grade through 12th grade (or change of voice), provides music at several Sunday services during the year. Older members also join the Adult Choir for the popular Nine Lessons and Carols service. The choir is under the direction of Nancy Whipkey and Lisa St. Ores. The choir has made two CDs which were highly regarded, traveled to England, and has sung several times in Orchestra Hall with Doc Severinsen.

Adult Choir

The choir, composed of former youth choir members, older boys, and adults sing at services from September through May. The choir also provides special music at major holidays and other services including choral evensong and an Advent Lessons and Carols. The choir repertoire includes a variety of musical styles.

Bell Choir

The Bells of Ascension is a 3-octave handbell choir composed of adults and older youth. They play throughout the church year from September to May. Music played includes both prelude and communion music and bells are used at times to accompany service music, hymns, and choir anthems. The bell choir rehearses every Wednesday from 6:15 -7:15 p.m.

A Festival of Nine Lessons & Carols

The Festival of Lessons & Carols is a feast of choral music and scripture to prepare us for Christmas. Alternating readings and anthems express both the darkness and light present in Advent and ground us in the true story of the coming of the Christ Child.

Guest musicians and choristers bolster Ascension’s already top notch choir and music program. The church is decorated in sumptuous greens and reds, and candlelight sparkles in the twilight, making this perhaps the best worship service of the year at Ascension.
